We arrived in Mexico on 11 December 2010 and stayed for about 5 weeks before moving onto Guatemala. We stuck to the southern areas of the country as many areas in the north are too dangerous to travel through given the current "drug war". We saw a lot of places, and since all our travelling from place to place was done on buses, we saw a lot of the countryside too! A rough outline of our route is shown on this map:
We flew in Puerto Vallarta from Vegas via LA. Puerto Vallarta is a pretty town on the Pacific Coast (population 212,000 est) with cobblestone streets, whitewash houses and a fabulous restaurant called Joe Jack’s Fish Shack. This is where we had our first taste of Mexico – Guacamole, Ceviche, and Sopa de Mariscos or Seafood Soup, and super fresh, minty Mojitos. A mariachi band played us a “long song” for 70 pesos (short songs cost 50 pesos) while we ate. Grey felt embarrassed by this.

We stayed in a cheap but relatively clean(ish) guesthouse (or posada) called Posada del Roger and saw a lot of the town in the couple of days we stayed there because our room made us want to get out and about more.

Our second day in the town was the saint day of Lady Guadalupe, an important saint in the whole of Mexico but also the patron saint of the town. It was a massive day. Throughout the course of the day the whole town filtered through the small cathedral to pay their respects to Guadalupe. Families were out in force and all the little kids were dressed up in national costume. There was street food everywhere, and a band playing and people dancing in the main square of the town.
Highlights of PV:
- Strawberries in sugary cream;
- The beach at sunset with cans of Sol (better than Corona);
- Winning pool against Graham at Nacho Daddy, a Mexican pub, and the name “Nacho Daddy”;
- Grey eating Chilaquilas (breakfast nachos) the next morning. The most unhealthy breakfast I have ever seen.
